Identify children who are not in school and help them get enrolled in appropriate classes. Implement programmes for children from tribal communities to study in their mother tongue. Prepare children to face discrimination in schools by conducting awareness training for teachers and parents on gender-based and caste-based discrimination. Create awareness among children and parents about their rights to education and rules under the Right to Education Act (RTE Act).Engage community members to monitor the implementation of the RTE Act, quality of education in schools, safety of children, and hold government bodies and schools accountable. Ensure that the government fulfils its commitment to allocate 6% of GDP to education, as stated in the new education policy.
Challenges Limited funding in government schools
India's expenditure on education is about 3% of GDP. Government schools therefore lack the resources to provide quality education. The poor condition of government schools is leading to children enrolling in private schools. Private schools are believed to provide quality education, but this is not true. High fees in private schools
The cost of educating a child in a private school is about nine times that of a government school, which includes all education-related expenses, such as books and transportation. This leads to children from rich families easily enrolling in private schools while poor children are unable to attend. Thus, the social divide between the rich and the poor increases. Declining enrolment in government schools
Enrolment in government schools continues to decline. In 2017, 52.5% of children attended government schools compared to 70.8% in 1993. Despite the higher cost of education, many parents believe that private schools provide better education than government schools. Discrimination in education between boys and girls
According to NFHS-4, girls from rich families (top 20%) received about nine years of education, while girls from poor families (bottom 20%) received no education. It is estimated that due to school closures during the pandemic, poor girls may lose 50% of their total years of education. Girls are forced into early marriage and child labour, and have to bear the brunt of household chores.
Aarti's Story
At the age of 7, Aarti should have been in school, playing with her classmates and pursuing her dreams. Yet for her parents, Aarti's education took a backseat. She was pulled out of school to take on household responsibilities.
LAKSHY DREAM FOUNDATION is fighting to implement the Right to Education Act in India. Donations from people like you have helped us reach out to Aarti and her family and make them understand the importance of education in Aarti's life. Today she has been re-enrolled in Class 3. She is now the Right to Education Brand Ambassador at her school and is also an integral part of her school's Bal Manch (Student Parliament). As an RTE Ambassador, she encourages parents to send their children to school.
Aarti also tutors children after school and wants to become a teacher one day. When people like you support girls like Aarti, they inspire hundreds of other girls to attend school.
Your monthly contribution will help send girls out of classrooms across India back to school and fulfill their dreams. Donate today to help girls like Aarti become the future leaders of our nation.
